The expansion to the Illinois Victims’ Economic Security & Safety Act (VESSA), HB3582, co-sponsored by Representative Robyn Gabel and State Senator Robert Peters for your leadership, passed the Illinois Senate and House with bipartisan support in May 2023.
The amendment was signed into law on August 20, 2021, by Govenor J.B. Pritzker, along with many other critical DV bills. Survivors know that access to trauma recovery is critical to breaking the cycle of violence and increasing safety. This VESSA expansion will provide more survivors and victims of violent crime —including homicide and injuries from gun violence —with critical workplace policies and protections needed to access trauma recovery support and services.
Thank you to Governor Pritzker and to Rep. Robyn Gabel and Sen. Robert Peters for your leadership on HB3582. Thank you all who co-sponsored this bill in the House and the Senate and to all the survivors, organizers, and advocates who made this a reality.
